Hegel, the Maccabean Revolt and Today

19 11 2016

The Hegelian dilectic is clearly at work in politics today. Most are too emotionally engaged with the election and its aftermath to see the forest for the trees. The best way to understand what is taking place is detach ourselves from current affairs and too look at a similar time in history.

Many parallels have been drawn in the past between America and ancient Israel. At the end of their Babylonian in 538AD, the Jews fled west across the river, to the promised land were they were free to worship God unhindered. Similarly after the captivity of the Christian church, under the hand of mystery Babylon came to an end, protestants fled across the sea to the west to their promised land (Rev 17:4-6; 12:13-16) were they had the freedom to worship God according to their consciences. In their promised lands, life was at first hard, but with God’s blessings and their hard work they slowly rebuilt their nations. The day came when both finally gained their independence as nations. For Israel it at the time of Alexander the Great, for America it was 1783. They continued to prosper materially and spiritually for a time.

Unfortunately, for many Jews, prosperity invariably brought a falling away from the faith. Many of the leading Jews adopted Hellenism, imitating the customs of the gentiles. The leading Jews sent their children to Greek schools and studied how to merge Greek philosophy with Judaism. The rulers of Israel specifically became “liberalized” after this manner. The high priest, Jason (175-172 BC), even had a gymnasium built in Jerusalem where Olympic style games were run and, since these were conducted naked, the Jewish competitors underwent surgery to reverse the visible effects of circumcision. Jason introduced many other Greek customs; established educational institutions to train the young Jews in Greek philosophy and founded yet another Greek city of Antioch, named after the Syrian king. Amazingly, Jason was overthrown because he was suspected of being partial to traditional Judaism. The office of High priest at the time was completely corrupted and was typically attained by murder and fraud.

However these progressive sentiments were not largely shared by the majority of common scribes and priests who were more conservative. While many of the liberal elite were happy to live and let live, events took a turn for the worse when the main sponsor of Hellenism, namely Antiochus decided that the time was right to eradicate the remaining influence of traditional Judaism. Laws were passed outlawing traditional religous expression and mandating anti-Jewish practices. This broke the camel’s back so to speak and under the leadership of a low level Jewish priest, Mattathais the Hasmodean, the commoners revolted against the liberals, overturning them and their foreign sponsors. The reformation was so thorough, so complete that never again would traditional Jewish law be overturned nor liberal laws be imposed. The conservatives, under the name of pharisees ensured that national character with its traditions was preserved and protected.

However the reform went too far, the dialectic was perfected. The swing to the right was a masterful stroke on the part of the master dialectician, Lucifer. In their zeal to restore the authority of the Torah, the pharisees destroyed it. In their zeal, they created extra biblical laws to enhance and safeguard God’s law, and they held these to be more sacrosanct than God’s own law. When Christ came, because he did not support their enhancements to God’s law they rejected him. They preferred to break God’s law and murder Christ to preserve their own laws and traditions, while thinking they were doing God’s will.

Joh 11:48  If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation.

While the Jewish rejection of Christ was not to take place until later, the seeds of that rejection were planted with the Maccabean Revolt. The Hasmodeans were popularly called the Maccabees meaning “hammerer”, a reference to the violence of their revolt. The revolt was contrary to what God had told the Jews after their return from captivity; that He would “not save them by bow, nor by sword, nor by battle, by horses, nor by horsemen” (Hos 1:7) “not by might… but by my spirit” (Zec 4:6). God had also told them that they would no longer have a prince to rule over them until the coming of the Messiah (Eze 21:26-27) yet the Maccabees, who were not of the seed of David, claimed for themselves the crown of Judah which belonged only to the soon coming Messiah. With the overthrow of the priestly house of Zadok (Eze 48:11), Judah would never again have a legitimate high priesthood. Instead the Maccabees claimed the role of high priest as well. They however were not legitimate since they did not come from the house of Zadok but only a rural priesthood. They established the Hasmodean dynasty of high priest-kings.  Never before in the history of Israel had the office of king and high priest been united, being contrary to God’s counsel.

Thus under the guise of defending the faith the Maccabees set aside God’s word and in doing so set up a counterfeit faith that claimed to be, and externally looked like the original, but in essence was not. This was easily proven by the rejection of Christ, even as they claimed to be waiting for him. Satan’s deception was complete, the Hegelian dialectic perfected, Jerusalem destroyed.

What about today? The same history is being repeated with the same result. The Hegelian dialectic is as much at play now as it was 2000 years ago. The once God blessed nation has lost its way. Radical liberalism like Helenism, pagan philosophy has inundated the land. Radical liberalism is promoted by powerful people, governments have been corrupted, society transformed. An alternate agenda is promoted, Christianity is marginalised, and the free exercise thereof legislated against. A groundswell of conservative opposition has arisen to break free from the cords that radical liberalism has sought to bind Christianity and the nation with. However the nation will not be destroyed by liberals, the beast and the mark of the beast are not liberal institutions. In order to bring about the rise of those institutions the nation must be led to a reaction against liberalism that doesn’t just restore what has been lost of our Christian culture but surpasses it. It will surpass it as the Maccabees did, by creating extra biblical laws to protect God’s law, by merging church and state and taking a power that does not belong to themselves. Then those that do not abide by the enhanced laws will be treated, as was Christ. The mark of the beast will be enforced.

The history of Uzzah (2 Sam 2:3-8) is instructive. Fearing that the ark of God would fall, Uzzah reached out his hand to take hold of it. While motive was good, he had forgotten that God has expressly forbidden anyone to touch the ark except the Levites on pain of death. Instantly “the anger of the LORD was kindled against Uzzah; and God smote him there for his error; and there he died by the ark of God” There is a very present and real danger that many like Uzzah are reaching thinking they are doing a good work, without realising that they are treading on forbidden ground. Could it be that the consequences of a  popular backlash, while rightly motivated, but going too far in defending Christian culture may be the popular establishment of the mark of the beast. Speaking of the end of the world Jesus said:

Mat 24:9 -10 Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name’s sake.  And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another.

Joh 16:1-2  These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be offended. They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service.

Rev 13:15  And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.

A reformation in the nation is urgently needed, that which has been lost must be restored. We must be careful however not go beyond restoring that which has been lost. There are forces that have been waiting for the right moment, to push beyond the restoration of Christian liberties, and impose a whole new order of things that will bring results that they can not foresee, and that but a few understand.
