Daniel 11:32-45

An Outline of the First Beast (Kingdom) and a recap of the Fourth

They That Understand

Dan 11:33-35 And they that understand among the people shall instruct many: yet they shall fall by the sword, and by flame, by captivity, and by spoil, many days. Now when they shall fall, they shall be holpen with a little help: but many shall cleave to them with flatteries. And some of them of understanding shall fall, to try them, and to purge, and to make them white, even to the time of the end: because it is yet for a time appointed.(Compare with Rev 13:7-10)

Division of Western Roman Empire: 538 – 900 AD

The Western Roman Empire fragmented into ten divisions as is attested to by Niccolò Machiavelli in his History of Florence, Book I and also by Sir Isaac Newton in Observations upon the Prophecies of Daniel, and the Apocalypse of St. John (London: 1733), chap.6.  These kingdoms were later to confederate into the Holy Roman Empire. The Christians of the first centuries were unanimous in their belief that the man of sin described by Paul in 2 Thes 2:2-7 would arise when the power of the ancient Roman Empire had been broken. Those that understood these things and instructed others about the rise of the man of sin were mercilessly persecuted for centuries.

Rise of 10 kings

After the fall of the current world dominating Empire we are told in Revelation that a final confederate kingdom of ten kings will arise that will give their power to the “beast which was and is not yet is.” (Rev 17:8,12-13) This beast is a kingdom (Dan 7:23) that existed in the past, but received a deadly wound (Rev 13:3) and yet recovers to again re-establish its worldwide power. That this is the rebirth of the Holy Roman Empire is evident from the description of its persecutions of the saints found in Rev 13:7-10; 17:6. Those who understand these things and instruct others, refusing to worship this beast will be mercilessly persecuted.

Magnify Himself Above God

Dan 11:36-37:And the king shall do according to his will; and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the indignation be accomplished: for that that is determined shall be done. Neither shall he regard the God of his fathers, nor the desire of women, nor regard any god: for he shall magnify himself above all. (Compare with Rev 13:5-6)

Holy Roman Empire

While the Holy Roman Empire was for the most part a hegemony of different kings, their authority was subject to one self-styled king of kings. The head of the church not only claimed the power to crown kings and emperors but also to depose kings by excommunicating them, divesting them of royal authority, absolving their subjects from their allegiance. This was the proud boast of popes Gregory VII and Innocent III. In addition these priest-kings claimed the power to alter the times and laws commanded by God  (Dan 7:25) thus exalting themselves above God. The various orders of the church were taught to reject the desire of women and remain celibate.

Babylon rides the beast

The kingdom depicted by Babylon riding the beast is a state in subjection to a church that arises in the last days is that of the man of sin, “Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.” 2 Thes 2:4, and who blasphemes God and his name Rev 13:6 by claiming God’s authority and through his blasphemous titles “full of names of blasphemy” Rev 17:3 (Blasphemy is making oneself out to be God or equal to God. John 10:33) This beast (the reincarnated Holy Roman empire) will claim the power to command and regulate worship contrary to that set out by God (Rev 13:12) and thus exalt itself above God.

Divides the Land for Gain

Dan 11:38-39:But in his estate shall he honour the God of forces: and a god whom his fathers knew not shall he honour with gold, and silver, and with precious stones, and pleasant things. Thus shall he do in the most strong holds with a strange god, whom he shall acknowledge and increase with glory: and he shall cause them to rule over many, and shall divide the land for gain.”

Holy Roman Empire

The popes claimed the right “to divide the land” for their own advantage. Pope Adrian IV gave Henry II king of the Normans permission to invade Ireland in the famous papal Bull, “Laudabiliter” where Adrian blessed the invasion based on Henry’s “willingness to pay an annual tribute to the blessed Peter of one penny from every house.” The invasion in 1172 was ratified by the then current pope Alexander III who wrote to Henry expressing his confidence that it was Henry’s  desire to “extend the privileges of the church,” and “to establish her jurisdiction where at present she has none.”

Following the discovery of the New World a territorial dispute between Portugal and Spain in 1493 the Papal Bull “Inter Caetera” granted all lands 100 leagues from the north to the south pole west and south of any of the Azores or Cape Verde Islands to Spain in return for a share of any proceeds (gold) and the conversion of the natives. This was followed by another bull “Dudum siquidem”, the same year entitled Extension of the Apostolic Grant and Donation of the Indies that gave all mainlands and islands then belonging to India to Spain, even if they were east of the line. The Bishop of Rome then issued another bull called “Ea quae” in 1506 following the 1494 “Treaty of Tordesillas” to rectify grievances between Spain and Portugal over the “Inter Caetera” bull. This moved the line to the west along a north south meridian of 370 leagues west of the Cape Verde Islands.

Babylon Rides the Beast

The 10 kings that form part of the new world order beast will under the blessing of the head of the church divide the world for the benefit of the church that rides the beast. Nations will be invaded and governments overturned. The Club of Rome has already proposed such a division of the world for gain into ten regions under the control of an autocratic world government. The proposed ten world administrative regions are; (1) North American Union, (2) European Union, (3) Japan and the Pacific Islands (4) Australia and South Africa (5) Russia, Siberia, Mongolia, Korea (6) Central and South America (7) North Africa and Middle East including Pakistan (8) Central Africa, (9) India and South East Asia and (10) China.

This is the final kingdom of men in the history of the world since we are told in Rev 19:19-20 (see also 2 Thes 2:8) that Christ will destroy the beast together with the kings of the earth and their armies at his coming and cast into a lake of fire. Thus no kings or armies will remain to make war and overthrow each other.

At the Time of the End

Dan 11:40 And at the time of the end shall the king of the south push at him: and the king of the north shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over.

The Time of the End

According to Daniel 12:4 the time of the end would be when “many shall run to and fro and knowledge shall be increased.” There has never been a time that meets to specification given to Daniel more accurately than the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Since the industrial revolution launched by the development of the steam engine and steam locomotion in 1784 by James Watt, there has been constant advancement in and dependence on transport. The amount of scientific knowledge available to us since then has also exploded.

Given that the previous verses in Daniel (v36-69) described the Holy Roman Empire that was overthrown by Napoleon in 1798, verse 40 must be speaking about a new nation that was to arise at that time and become a world power. That nation as we shall show, is the USA, which was to establish the next worldwide empire. In claiming that verses 40-45 apply to the USA, they must also apply to its historical parallel, the ancient Roman Empire. As Napoleon was the prophetic counterpart of Alexander the Great (see verses 2-15), verses 40-45 describe the history of the Roman Empire from its founding in the days of Alexander until its very end.

Accordingly Dan 11:40-45 give us an overview of the entire history of the Roman/US Empires as a supplementing what was already described in verses 16-30.

Roman Republic: 330 – 146 BC

The “time of the end” of Israel began soon after the rise of Alexander the great in 330 BC. The Roman Republic was at that time becoming as a nation, which is why it is described as “him” indicating that this is speaking of a nation without a king. Across the sea to the south west of Rome was Carthage; Rome’s rival for control of the Mediterranean, which came against Rome during the Punic Wars from in 264  – 146 BC involving both navies and land warfare. This war began for control of the island of Sicily.

During the second Punic War Philip V of Macedon, formed an alliance with Carthage, and simultaneously attacked Rome. This brought Antiochus the Great, the king of the North (Seleucia), who was Philip’s ally into the war in 203 BC. Rome gained the victory, opening the way for the establishment of its worldwide empire.

US Republic: 1798 – 1944

The “time of the end” of the Christian world began in 1798. The US Republic was at that time becoming a nation, which is why it is described as “him” indicating that this is speaking of a nation without a king. Across the sea to the south west of the US was Japan; Rome’s rival for control of the Pacific Ocean, which came against it during the Pacific War from in 1939  – 1945 involving both navies and land warfare. This war began for control of the island of Hawaii.

During the Pacific war, Adolf Hitler (the king of the North), formed an alliance with Japan, and simultaneously attacked the USA. The USA was victorious, opening the way for the establishment of its worldwide empire.

Enter Into Many Countries

Dan 11:41 He shall enter also into the glorious land, and many countries shall be overthrown: but these shall escape out of his hand, even Edom, and Moab, and the chief of the children of Ammon.

Roman Republic: 146 – 63 BC

Rome quickly expanded annexing Macedon, Syria and then Judea to Rome.  Yet Edom, Moab and Ammon would escape out of his hand. These three somehow managed to escape Rome’s hand at the time of Pompey’s conquest of Syria and Judea.

US Republic: 1945 – 1952

The US quickly expanded its sphere of influence, through its European and Pacific protectorates that formed part of NATO and other treaties.  The US was the first country to recognize Israel in 1948 becoming a US protectorate 4 years later when it signed a mutual defence agreement with it. Israel is today completely dependent on the USA for its defence. The ancient countries of Edom, Moab and Ammon now mainly form part of the state of Jordan that remains outside of the US hegemony.

Egypt Shall Not Escape

Dan 11:42-43:He shall stretch forth his hand also upon the countries: and the land of Egypt shall not escape. But he shall have power over the treasures of gold and of silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt: and the Libyans and the Ethiopians shall be at his steps.

Roman Empire: 63 BC –320 AD

In 31 BC after the Battle of Actium, Rome annexed Egypt gaining control of its immense wealth. Rome also established outposts or buffer zones in Libya and Ethiopia to guard against barbarians. Rome continued its relentless conquest of many nations throughout Europe, Asia Minor, North Africa and the Middle East as far as the Euphrates. The Roman Empire reached its largest extent under the Emperor Hadrian in 138 AD.

US Empire: 1952 – 201X

Following the 7 day war “in exchange for a complete cessation of hostilities and Israel’s return of the Sinai Peninsula, the United States provided a total of $7.3 billion to both parties in 1979. The “Special International Security Assistance Act of 1979” (P.L.96-35) provided both military and economic grants to Israel and Egypt at a ratio of 3 to 2, respectively.41 (see here) In 1991, Egyptian support for the U.S.-led international coalition against Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait led Congress to authorize the cancellation of Egypt’s $6.7 billion military debt. Since 1979, Egypt has been the second largest recipient of US foreign economic and military aid (military aid) at $12 billion a year after Israel. Clearly Egypt has not escaped and will continue to be under the US influence even against its will.

The US hegemony massively expanded following the end of the cold war through economic means and military invasions to topple non compliant regimes.  NATO has also incorporated many ex-soviet block countries.  It now boasts 700 military bases in more than 130 of the worlds 195 countries. The US has certainly “overflowed and passed over” the countries of this world.

He Shall Come To His End

Dan 11:44-45:But tidings out of the east and out of the north shall trouble him: therefore he shall go forth with great fury to destroy, and utterly to make away many. And he shall plant the tabernacles of his palace between the seas in the glorious holy mountain; yet he shall come to his end, and none shall help him.”

Roman Empire: 320 AD – 1450

The beginning of the fall of the Western Roman Empire can be dated to when the capital of the Empire was relocated to Constantinople (Byzantium).  Byzantium was an ancient city situated on seven hills that was considered sacred at that time because of its many temples and shrines, as did Rome. Byzantium was situated on the shore of the Bosporus between the Black sea and the Sea of Marmara that is linked to the Aegean Sea.

This came about because Constantine’s co-Emperor and brother-in-law, Licinius, had gained control over the entire eastern part of the Empire and Constantine fearing that Licinius had plans against him set out to war with him. Licinius had based his army at Byzantium but withdrew it across the Bosporus Strait where he was finally defeated in 324 AD.  Constantine emerged victorious after various battles and decided to move the capital of the Empire to Byzantium.  Opening the way for the rise of the Holy Roman Empire.

Constantinople and the Eastern Roman Empire eventually fell to the Ottoman Turks after the pleas for help from Constantine XI fell on deaf ears in Western Europe, despite of all the religious concessions he made at the request of Rome including giving up worship on Saturdays. Thus the most significant events at the rise and fall of Rome are described.

US Empire

In like manner some military threat in the near future from the north east (Europe? / Russia?) will cause the US to go on the offensive. In the aftermath it will relocate its capital and in this open the way for the rise of the 10 kings that rule with the beast. Soon after it come to its end and no one will be able or willing to help it.

Time of Trouble

Dan 12:1:And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book.”
