Daniel 11:16-31

The History of the Fourth Kingdom

He That Cometh

Dan 11:16: “But he1 that cometh against him shall do according to his own will, and none shall stand before him: and he shall stand in the glorious land, which by his hand shall be consumed.“NOTE: (1) The protagonist is identified simply as “he” rather than a king, because the nation that arises as world power after the Greek empire has no king it is a republic

Roman Republic: 190 – 63BC

The Roman Republic rose to worldwide power without opposition following the end of the Seleucid-Ptolemaic conflict. No country could stand before its might. The glorious land refers to the land of Israel that was annexed to Rome in 63 BC for its protection but was eventually destroyed in 70AD.

Rome had been founded in part by Greek ancestors about 700BC to the west of Greece across the sea and its symbol was a golden eagle.

US Republic: 1989 – 2012

Following the fall of the iron curtain in Europe and the break-up of the Soviet Union the Republic of the USA became the sole world superpower. A primary concern of USA foreign policy is the protection of the state of Israel, but according to the vision it will eventually be responsible for Israel’s demise.

The USA had been founded by European ancestors and arose to the west of Europe across the sea and its symbol was a bald eagle.

Fall of the Republic

Dan 11:17:He shall also set his face to enter with1 the strength of his whole kingdom, and upright ones with2 him; thus shall he do: and he shall give him the daughter of women3, corrupting her: but she shall not stand on his side, neither be for him.“NOTES: (1) The 1st “with” is not in the original; (2) the 2nd “with” is most often translated as “against”; (3) the word translated woman can also be translated as adulteress or harlot.

Roman Empire: 49-48 BC

Julius Caesar determined to take control of the Roman government. A few honest senators that refused to be bribed known as “the boni” (the good or upright) opposed him but were unable to stop him leading to the end of the republic and the rise of the Roman Empire. Julius pursued his opponents to Egypt where he entered into a scandalous affair with the 18-year-old Cleopatra who wanted him to support her claim to the Egyptian throne above that of her brother. Having obtained the support of the Caesars, Cleopatra later attempted to overthrow them.

US Empire: 2013?-2016?

Every principle of republican government will again be overturned. A modern Caesar will arise against the opposition of an honest few [see the prophecy of the three headed eagle]. He will also enter into a scandalous relationship with various churches, corrupting them and grant them state support of their religious claims in exchange for their political support. Having obtained the support of the state these churches will later attempt to overthrow the state.

[A woman in the Bible represents a church – a pure woman a pure church, a harlot is an unfaithful one (Jer 3:14; Eph 5:23-32) Mystery Babylon is the mother of harlots – Rev 17:5. The daughters of Babylon (churches of the “mother church”) will become corrupted when they seek the help of the state to enforce their religious dogmas.]

The Civil War

Dan 11:18:After this shall he turn his face unto the isles1, and shall take many: but a prince for his own behalf shall cause the reproach offered by him to cease; without his own reproach he shall cause it to turn upon him.” NOTE: (1) The word “isles” also means “coast lands”

Roman Empire: 47-45 BC

From Egypt Julius Caesar pursued his civil war against the republican forces around the Mediterranean coast with major battles at Ruspina (Tunisia) and Munda on the Spanish coast where at least 70,000 were killed and another 20,000 were captured or killed at the Battle of Zela.

US Empire: 2013-2016?

Opposition to the modern Caesar will lead to a civil war that will result in many being taken from the coastal areas.

Raiser of Taxes

Dan 11:19 – 20:Then he shall turn his face toward the fort of his own land: but he shall stumble and fall, and not be found. Then shall stand up in his estate a raiser of taxes in the glory of the kingdom: but within few days he shall be destroyed, neither in anger, nor in battle.”

Roman Empire: 44BC – 14AD

Julius Caesar returned to Rome victorious only to be murdered by his friends. His nephew succeeded him to become the emperor Augustus Caesar. He formalised the abolition of the republic and as Ponitfex Maximus united in one the head of state and head of the church. In 4 BC Augustus systematically taxed the empire. He died in 14AD in his bed of natural causes.

US Empire: 201X

The modern Caesar will die in the safety of his own home. His successor will drastically raise taxes in an attempt to repair the economy, he will formalise the union of church and state. He will be “destroyed” after a short time either by disease or by other means.

The Vile One

Dan 11:21And in his estate shall stand up a vile person, to whom they shall not give the honour of the kingdom: but he shall come in peaceably, and obtain the kingdom by flatteries.”

Roman Empire: 14 – 37 AD

Tiberius was the 3rd Caesar. Augustus had initially refused to nominate him as successor saying that he was too vile. Hated by all he was eventually suffocated with pillows. During his reign Jesus Christ was crucified and the kingdom of God was taken from the Jews and given to the gentiles.

US Empire: 2016-2020?

The 3rd modern Caesar will likewise be unpopular. During his rule the followers of Christ will be persecuted and put to death as Christ had been, and the gospel will be taken from those who have proved unworthy of it and given to others.

The League

Dan 11:22 – 23And with the arms of a flood shall they be overflown from before him, and shall be broken; yea, also the prince of the covenant1. And after the league made with him he shall work deceitfully: for he shall come up, and shall become strong with a small people.”NOTES: (1) The word “covenant” is often translated as “league”. While a league is a union between two parties, a covenant is the legal instrument that binds them.

 Roman Empire: 44 BC

The vision appears to go back and discusses events under the reign of Augustus. The Second Triumvirate was essentially a power-sharing league formed between Octavius (Augustus) and Mark Antony, with Octavius controlling the western half of the Roman Empire and Antony the eastern half. At the time Octavius was an unknown 20-year-old who quickly extorted his way into power. He stole money from the public treasury to buy the service of the army. He then set out to war against his rival Antony, but when they met they united their forces to seize the government of Rome while at the same time they worked deceitfully against each other. Antony (the prince) would eventually be broken in this conflict.

US Empire:
This modern Caesar will also enter into a power sharing arrangement during his rule, but the co-rulers will work against each other deceitfully. One of the co-rulers will eventually be broken in this conflict.

The League Ended

Dan 11:24 – 27He shall enter peaceably even upon the fattest places of the province; and he shall do that which his fathers have not done, nor his fathers’ fathers; he shall scatter among them the prey, and spoil, and riches: yea, and he shall forecast his devices against the strong holds, even for a time. And he shall stir up his power and his courage against the king of the south with a great army; and the king of the south shall be stirred up to battle with a very great and mighty army; but he shall not stand: for they shall forecast devices against him.Yea, they that feed of the portion of his meat shall destroy him, and his army shall overflow: and many shall fall down slain. And both these kings’ hearts shall be to do mischief, and they shall speak lies at one table; but it shall not prosper: for yet the end shall be at the time appointed.”

Roman Empire: 31 BC

These verses describe the conflict between Octavius and Antony who was based in Egypt (South of Rome). Unlike other leaders who had risen to power through military exploits, Octavius had bribed his way to the top. Once Octavius was confident of his position he moved against Antony with a great army. Antony prepared to meet him at the Battle of Actium involving 400,000 soldiers (50 legions) and 560 warships. Before the battle had begun Antony’s general defected to Augustus and a malaria outbreak killed most of Antony’s navy. Without a fleet Antony’s legions then deserted and Antony committed suicide. The time spoken of using the day for a year principle is 360 years from 31 BC till the capital was moved away from Rome to Constantinople in 330 AD.

US Empire:

The conflict between the future Caesar and his co-ruler will lead to a military conflict but before a military engagement takes place the co-ruler will be betrayed and assassinated by his own. The time spoken of here will be 360 literal days where the Caesar will prosper.

Indignation Against the Holy Covenant

Dan 11:28Then shall he return into his land with great riches; and his heart shall be against the holy covenant; and he shall do exploits, and return to his own land.”

Roman Empire: 31BC – 321AD

After his victory at Actium Augustus annexed Egypt and brought so much gold back with him that its value in Rome dropped by half.

US Empire

The defeat of his co-ruler will greatly enrich the remaining Caesar but this will only encourage his defiance of God’s holy covenant.

The Ships of Chittim

Dan 11:29 – 30 “At the time appointed he shall return, and come toward the south; but it shall not be as the former, or as the latter. For the ships of Chittim shall come against him: therefore he shall be grieved, and return, and have indignation against the holy covenant: so shall he do; he shall even return, and have intelligence with them that forsake the holy covenant.”

Roman Empire: 455 AD

Chittim is the land of the Phoenicians (Isa 23:1) and so it was Phoenician ships that attack Rome, and they did so setting out from Carthage, an ancient Phoenician city under the rule of Genseric the king of the Vandals that had resettled in the area. In 455 AD Genseric’s forces sack Rome and for the first time in its battles against the “king of the south” Rome returned home ‘grieved’. The Western Roman Empire was soon to collapse.

At this time Rome had intensified its persecution of all who would not conform to its form of state controlled “universal” Christianity. Pagans and non-conforming Christians were equally persecuted.

US Empire

Lebanon is the modern name for the land of Chittim and on its border with Syria is the recently upgraded Russian nuclear naval base of Tartus. Ships will again come from Chittim and cause grief marking the final years of the modern empire. At this time persecution will be intensified against all who will not worship according to the state controlled “universal” Christianity.

The Fall of the Empire

Dan 11:31 – 32And arms shall stand on his part, and they shall pollute the sanctuary of strength, and shall take away the daily sacrifice, and they shall place the abomination that maketh desolate. And such as do wickedly against the covenant shall he corrupt by flatteries: but the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits.

Note: (1) the word ‘sacrifice’ does not appear in the original, and the word ‘daily’ simply means something that has been continual. (2) The expression “abomination that maketh desolate” can also be translated as the “desolating idolatry”

Roman Empire: 535 – 538

The city of Rome was in turn overthrown by the Goths who occupied it, polluting what had once been the sanctuary of strength of the Roman Empire. It was now dependent on others for its liberation and the Byzantine emperor Justinian sent his generals Belisarius and Narsus to “liberate” it from the Goths.

While the Goths had largely retained the institutions of Rome’s government, upon recapturing Rome, Narsus abolished the institutions of Rome’s secular government that had lasted for 1200 years and the Bishop of Rome assumed total control of the city. In this act the ‘daily’ or continual institutions of secular government were replaced by the “desolating idolatry.” The fall of the Western Roman Empire was now complete.

US Empire

The fall of the US Empire will likewise be accomplished by foreign armies that will come to help “defend” it against its enemies. These however will complete the fall of the empire abolishing its remaining government institutions and bringing it fully under the control of the politico-religious power known in Revelation as “the beast”
